Teaching at West Nairobi School

While working at Liberty University in the summer of 2008, I was approached by the director of West Nairobi School in Karen, Kenya, to accept a teaching position there.  A teacher had to leave unexpectedly, and they had an immediate opening and need.  After praying about it, I felt that God would have me accept the position.  That began a very busy time.  I only had three weeks to accomplish everything and be on the plane!  God worked everything out; I gave a notice at work, found renters for my house, obtained an international driver's license, shopped, packed, and flew out three weeks from the day I was approached about the position!

After arriving in Nairobi, the next thing to accomplish was to find a place to rent.  Another teacher from Spain and I were able to find an apartment pretty quickly and the school year began!  Since this was my first year of teaching, I had a lot to learn and do.  Some things that I learned were how to live without water in my apartment for several days at a time, how to drive on the wrong side of the road, how to adapt to a new culture, and how to teach the first few weeks of school with no textbooks!

God blessed and I had a wonderful school year.  I really grew to love the students in my class and life in Kenya.  My goal has been to teach students the academic skills they need for life and to share with them the love Christ has for us and to win them to the Lord.  Many of the students are saved, but there are those who still need to accept Christ as their personal savior.
